Gilda Bruno (1998) is a freelance arts and culture writer, editor and photographer currently based in London. Writing in both English and Italian, she has previously contributed to AnOther, Apartamento, The British Journal of Photography, DAZED, Document Journal, The Face, Family Style, Financial Times, Foam, HUCK, Hunger, i-D, Millionaire, PAPER, Re-Edition, VICE, and Vogue Italia, and collaborates regularly with Il Giornale dell’Arte [the Italian sister edition of The Art Newspaper] and Elephant.
While most of her articles examine how art and wider culture can be used as a means of promoting positive societal shifts, Gilda has delved into other subjects, too – from the rise of startups fighting against climate change and the need for a more sustainable hospitality industry to the implications of higher education’s skyrocketing costs. She is the editor of COSE Journal, an independent magazine exploring our relationships to everyday objects and their functions against the backdrop of overconsumption and capitalism.
Since July 2021, Gilda works as an Editorial Assistant on the print edition of AnOther. In October 2023, she joined the Life & Arts desk of the Financial Times as a casual Sub-Editor and Writer, where she works on a monthly basis.
Bringing three years of experience across print and online media, Gilda has profiled a number of acclaimed personalities such as Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, Magnum Photos image-makers Alessandra Sanguinetti and Martin Parr, street photography legend Jamel Shabazz, multidisciplinary artist Yoann Bourgeois, visionary photographer Viviane Sassen, and AMBUSH creative director Yoon Ahn. She has also interviewed some of the most exciting names on the emerging photography scene, from Marie Tomanova and Carla Liesching to Sarah Bahbah, Max Miechowski and Hajar Benjida among numerous others.
Between December 2022 and November 2023, she curated ITV-backed platform Woo’s fortnightly art & culture column, “Stop Scrolling”, where every two weeks she brought readers a roundup of exhibitions, art fairs and photo books to check out, as well as exclusive conversations with thought-provoking voices working within the creative industry. In April 2023, Gilda was included in the 30 Under 30 list of Il Giornale dell'Arte alongside other Italian artists, curators, speakers, art historians, and writers shaping today's art scene.
In May 2023, she moderated a talk between independent publishing house New Dimension’s founder Ben Goulder and photographer and director Sam Wright on the occasion of the launch of The City of the Sun (2023) — Wright’s new book — for which she wrote the foreword. Following the official release of the volume, which debuted at Photo London the same week, the conversation took place at Tate Modern as part of the annual Offprint book fair weekend.
Her words also offered an introduction to photographer Dani d’Ingeo’s debut monograph, New Order (2022), which dives into the intimate universe of queer friendships through a sun-kissed, nostalgic collection of images lensed against the coruscating backdrop of the southern Italian coastline.
